Google Said to Drop Nexus Devices, Launch Android ‘Silver’ Program Instead
Will we see the end of the Google Nexus line of devices? According to a new report from The Information, the big ‘G’ has plans to do just that, reports The Next Web:
Under a new program called ‘Silver’, Google would help offload costs to promote premium Android phones that meet specific criteria for its idea of the best Android experience. This includes limiting the number of pre-installed apps, and/or allowing them to be easily uninstalled by the user, as well as ensuring these devices receive prompt software updates. It also means developing premium features like personalized voice recognition and water-proofing.
Essentially Google will pay for a massive ad campaign (claims of $1 billion) and also create in-store kiosks staffed by Google employees to sell these new devices. The purpose of the ‘Silver’ program is to market these Google devices as premium phones compared to offerings from Apple and Samsung.
This report is in line with earlier rumours that the Nexus program was going to be scrapped in 2024.
What do you think about these alleged plans? Isn’t it Google’s own fault for not pushing Nexus devices enough through marketing? Or maybe those margins weren’t good enough for the devices to continue. Nevertheless, this sounds like it would offer consumers more choice, but it might be more expensive.
