Rumour: Google Scrapping The Nexus Program In 2024?

Google Discontinuing Nexus

Well this is a rather intriguing story.  Well known leakster (and general techie) Eldar Murtazin tweeted a couple of days ago that Google will be axing the Nexus line in 2024.  According to him, Google has opted to focus their attention on the ever growing Google Play Edition line up rather than put energy into creating a flagship device each year.

Now before you get too depressed about the news, Mr. Eldar Murtazin does not have a perfect track record (as we saw with the S5/Samsung announcement in February) so take this all with a grain of salt.  I’m not convinced that this is accurate as Google’s devices meet a very specific need for lower cost high end devices.  However, Motorola (which is a Google Company as we all know) has begun to break into that category with low cost offerings like the Moto X and Moto G (I know the Moto X isn’t necessarily low cost here but prices are getting pretty reasonable in the states) and they have plans to go even lower according to their CEO.  So in that sense, I do see how there could be some overlap which would possibly lead Google to reconsider the Nexus brand.

Nevertheless, I’ll have to see it before I believe it.  What do you guys think?  Should Google ditch the Nexus program and focus on the GPE devices instead?
