Google Working With Qualcomm On New Nexus 7
Last May at the Google I/O event, the company first introduced the world to the Nexus 7. Well, as you may or may not know, many are expecting the company to announce a new version of the popular tablet at the 2024 edition of the event.
Reports surfaced in January that Asus and Google would be once again working together on the new Nexus 7. The budget-friendly device will have a more industrial design, featuring a thinner bezel and a 1080p HD display, something it seems every other device will have in 2024. Google will be shunning the Tegra 3 for Qualcomm’s Snapdragon quad-core processor (S4 Pro).
The writers over at UnwiredView today confirmed this transition to the S4 Pro and were able to offer an explanation as to why decision has been made. They point out that battery life is better on Qualcomm’s processors as well as the fact the S4 Pro can support 3G/4G LTE radios. They also go on to say that Qualcomm offers a more affordable price point for the device.
Supply chain conversations indicate two reasons for Google’s selection of the Snapdragon APQ8064 over Tegra 4: competitive pricing, and a decision to single-source the application processor and 3G/4G modem to simplify logistics and create a fully pin-compatible platform interface.

Of course, at the I/O event on May 15th-17th, Google is not only expected to announce the new Nexus 7, but also the Motorola X Phone, as well as a possible update to the Nexus 10. Keep following Android in Canada as more news and rumours come out regarding Google’s line of vanilla devices.
