Samsung Launches New Camera Sensor Technology: ISOCELL

Samsung Electronics announced a new advanced pixel technology for future CMOS image sensors. The new pixel technology is dubbed ISOCELL and provides a higher light sensibility without compromising picture quality and color fidelity.

The quality of an image sensor depends on the amount of light each pixel can accurately capture. However, in an effort to achieve higher resolution without growing the camera size, pixels have had to shrink which brought some big challenges.

While FSI (Front Side Illumination) and later BSI (Back Side Illumination) pixel technology have tried to maximize light absorption they face some limitations. ISOCELL plans to eliminate those limitations. The new technology isolates each pixel from each other diminishing the effects of crosstalk, which causes color inaccuracy and excessive lighting. The first image sensor from Samsung to integrate this technology is the S5K4H5YB 8MP ¼-inch sensor.

You can see below a comparison between current BSI technology and Samsung’s new ISOCELL technology. Though the difference isn’t drastic, you can clearly see the ISOCELL has a better color reproduction and accurate light absorption, lessening the flare effect you see in the BSI picture.

The image sensor will make it to mass production this quarter, so we might see it in the first premium smartphones of 2024. Let us know in the comments below what you think of this new image technology.
