Following the backlash caused by the news that the Moto G4 family – which is merely 18 months old – won’t’ be getting the Android 8.0 Oreo update – Motorola reconsidered its position. We’re happy to tell you that the Moto G4 Plus will indeed be upgraded to Google’s latest Android version.
Sadly, this doesn’t mean the standard Moto G4 and G4 Play will be upgraded to Oreo, as well. Unfortunately, the two handsets will remain stuck at Nougat forever. Sorry, folks!
For its part, Motorola claims that the Oreo mention which was spotted in a G4 infographic and then removed was a mistake. The company didn’t have any plans of updating any G4 device to Oreo, but now with all the fuss created around the situation, Motorola was forced to take another look at the situation.
Here’s Motorola official statement on the matter:
“It’s been brought to our attention that there were some errors in our marketing materials around Android O upgrades for Moto G4 Plus. This was an oversight on our part and we apologize for this miscommunication.
It’s our general practice for the Moto G family to get one major OS upgrade per device, but it’s important to us we keep our promises, so in addition to the N upgrade it has already received, we will be upgrading Moto G4 Plus to Android O. Because this is an unplanned upgrade, it will take some time to fit it into our upgrade schedule. Watch our software upgrade page for more information.”
So there you have it, Moto G4 Plus owners. You will get the update, but it might take a lot of time before you receive the notification alerting you Android 8.0 Oreo is available for your device.
