Google’s Budget Smartphone Still Happening, Won’t Be “Pixel” Branded
In a recent interview, senior vice president at Google, Rick Osterloh, confirmed that a Pixel 2 is indeed coming this year. But despite previous rumours saying that a more affordable Pixel will also make its way to the market, it seems that Google is focusing on only one Pixel this year – a premium one.
But talk of the budget Pixel doesn’t seem to want to die down. Now the original tipster who originally claimed a budget Pixel will be unveiled this year, comes back to clarify that a more affordable device from Google is indeed in the works. It just won’t be carrying the Pixel brand.
Ok, so maybe Google is planning to release a new Android One device, this time supported by its own hardware. The Android One initiative has failed to pick up in recent years and perhaps Google is looking to do something to resuscitate it.
Back in January, a report made its way online revealing that Google was apparently considering bringing the Android One initiative. So far, Android One phones are available in developing markets like India, Philippines or Nepal.
So it’s quite possible Google plans to keep the Pixel premium, while also offering something for the budget consumer. But not a Pixel-branded device.
