Are Google Stores On The Horizon?

9 to 5 Google today announced that “an extremely reliable source” was able to confirm to them that Google is planning to unveil their very own retail stores, with the goal of having flagship locations open in major metropolitan areas by the holidays. This really doesn’t come as much surprise given that Apple and Microsoft, two of Google’s biggest competitors, are already in the retail game.

Clearly, a Google store would serve as a place for prospective customers to check out Nexus phones and tablets as well as Chrome OS machines, two product lines the company really seems to be taking more seriously as of late. Let’s also not forget about all the phones Google will release under the Motorola name, something we are about to see this spring. Despite having major success with selling the Nexus 4 and 7 on Play, Google would surely be able to get their devices into more hands if people were first able to handle and check out the devices before making up their minds. To me, no matter how much I read about a great product, I still want to be able to see it first before I pull out the credit card.

According to 9 to 5 Google, the decision about the stores came due to Google’s upcoming retail launch of their Project Glass. Apparently, the company feels that customers will need to see these things in action and have access to in-person training like at a Genius Bar before shelling out the big bucks (Google Glasses are expected to be priced between $500 and $1000). In addition to Project Glass, Nexus, and Chrome devices, expect Google’s retail stores to serve as exhibits for other upcoming products Google is working on such as driverless cars and mini-drone delivery systems.
