Android 4.x Continues Its Slow Climb
We’re slowly getting there. Where is there? Well to the point where Gingerbread and previous iterations of Android become irrelevant and insignificant. In the latest Android distribution numbers, Android 4.x climbed a little bit higher while Android 2.x has declined a little bit more.
To be a little more specific, Android 4.x rose from 54.3% at the end of March to 55.9% at the end of April. Android 3.x dropped from 0.2% to 0.1% over the same time frame (it’s almost gone!!!) and Android 2.x and under dropped from 45.6% to 44%. All good signs for those who still cry fragmentation all the time.
My prediction is that those 2.x devices will become insignificant by years end. Updates will definitely play a part in the change but I think what’s really going to put those 2.x devices to bed is the literal demise of 2.x devices (as in the phones will stop working due to wear and tear) and eventual replacement with newer devices. Even the low end Android devices are running 4.x software now and since many of them have such a low cost they should sell in good numbers.
Now we can do this all over again with 5.x .
