Sony Officially Unveils The Xperia ZR

Xperia ZR Press 1

We first heard about Sony’s plan to release another “Z” phone late in April and today Sony has officially unveiled the new phone, the Xperia ZR.  Here’s the confirmed specs run down:

  • 4.6? 720p Display
  • 1.5GHz Quad-Core Snapdragon S4 Chip
  • 2GB RAM
  • 13MP Exmor RS Camera
  • IP55/IP58 Dust/Water Proof

So far everything lines up with the earlier rumours  but we’re still waiting on official word on the battery size and internal storage.  I’m hoping that it’ll be more than the rumoured 8GB as that just doesn’t seem to cut it these days.

All in all I’d say that Sony has a really solid mid-range device on their hands.  It’s got a pretty nice design and some fun colours for those who like to be different.  And for the most part it’s identical to the Z and ZL but the move to a smaller lower resolution screen could actually help the overall performance since it’s not having to push quite as many pixels.  But I think the biggest selling feature, and the thing that they need to advertise the most, is the water resistance.  That is the killer feature that other phones just aren’t matching at this point so it can really make this phone stand apart from the herd.  Sony has already put together a video showing off this unique feature so take a look at it below.

There’s no word on release dates and availability quite yet but lets hope they bring this guy to Canada this time around.  After the winter we had in Saskatchewan, I’m sure some people would’ve loved to have a bright pink or blue water resistant phone that didn’t get destroyed by the piles and piles of snow!
