Sorry BlackBerry Priv Owners, Your Phone Won’t’ Get Android 8.0 Oreo
A few days ago we brought you news that the BlackBerry KEYone will receive the Android 8.0 Oreo update. But what about the company’s other products?
Well, we have some bad news for BlackBerry Priv owners. The company’s General manager of Mobility Solutions, Alex Thurber confirmed during one of UTB Blogs’ podcast that the BlackBerry Priv will not receive the Android 8.0 Oreo update.
To be fair, the handset was launched more than two years ago, so it’s not like we weren’t expecting this. The Priv was introduced back in November 2024 with a 5.4-inch AMOLED display with 1440 x 2560 resolution and Coring Gorilla Glass 4.
The phone carries a Snapdragon 808 chipset which works in concert with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage (microSD card slot included). In the photo department, the Priv features an 18-megapixel sensor with f/2.2, OIS, phase detection autofocus and dual-LED flash, as well as a 2-megapixel selfie snapper.
The handset made a debut with Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out of the box but got upgraded to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. The handset never made it to Nougat, so it’s not a big shock that BlackBerry doesn’t plan to upgrade it to Android 8.0 Oreo.
Other Android OEMs including Nokia, OnePlus and HTC have promised the Android 8.0 will start hitting select devices from their portfolio soon.
