The Moto X (2024) Is Official!
So today was Motorola’s day to shine and they brought a quartet of new devices to the show as expected. First up, the big gun, the flagship, the Moto X (2024)! Let’s breakdown the specs:
- 5.2″ 1080p AMOLED Display
- 2.5GHz Quad-Core Snapdragon 801 Processor
- 2GB RAM
- 16GB Internal Storage
- 13MP Camera
- 2MP Front Facing Camera
- 2300 mAh Battery
- Android 4.4.4
- 140.8×72.4×9.97mm
- 144g
Unlike last years’ Moto X, Motorola listened to the consumer and made sure their new device matched up against the competition spec for spec. The only kind of disappointing aspect of the spec sheet is the battery size which is surprisingly small by today’s standars. Perhaps Motorola has found a way to really maximize battery life but we’ll have to wait and see on that.
As with the original Moto X, the new Moto X’s main selling points have little to do with the spec sheet and everything to do with their software and features. Once again they have gone very very basic with the software, offering near stock Android with a few helpful additions. Touchless Controls, one of my favourite features, is back and better then ever under the new name Moto Voice. Like the original Touchless Controls feature, Moto Voice allows you to interact with your phone completely hands free. However, you can now change the trigger phrase to anything you want and new commands have been implemented to work with popular apps like Facebook or WhatsApp.
Active Display is also back under a new name, Moto Display. The upgrade on this front has to do with their new IR sensor that will light up the display when you pass over it with your hand. Moto Assist rounds out the key Motorola features and offers the same contextual automation that we had on the Moto X.
Now one of the most intriguing things about the original Moto X was Moto Maker and it is back and better than ever. Motorola will now offer leather backs in addition to the colourful plastic and wood backs that we saw with the Moto X. Unfortunately, Moto Maker is STILL not available for us here in Canada. In their Google Hangout they also fail to mention Canada as a country that might get it soon. Very very disappointing news on that front.
As for what we can expect here in Canada, Telus has reached out stating that they will be carrying the Moto X (2024) and Moto 360. The Moto 360 will set you back $279 and we’re still awaiting a price for the Moto X. Although Telus didn’t state that they have an exclusive, rumblings around the web are that they will be the only carrier to pick up the new Moto, also very disappointing.
