Verizon’s New Droids May Give Us Some Details On The Moto X

Motorola Droid Ultra

Motorola and Verizon held an event in the states today to introduce their new Droid devices, the Droid Mini, Droid Ultra, and Droid MAXX.  Whether these devices come to Canada later on sans the Droid name we’re still unsure of however, we figured we’d share the news with you anyways as some of the details on these phones may tell us something about the Moto X.  First lets break down the specs of each:

Droid Mini:

  • 4.3″ 720p Display
  • Motorola X8 Processor
  • 2GB RAM
  • 16GB Internal Storage
  • 10MP Camera
  • 2MP Front Facing Camera
  • 2024 mAh Battery

Droid Ultra

  • 5″ 720p Display
  • Motorola X8 Processor
  • 2GB RAM
  • 16GB Internal Storage
  • 10MP Camera
  • 2MP Front Facing Camera
  • 2130 mAh Battery

Droid Ultra

  • 5″ 720p Display
  • Motorola X8 Processor
  • 2GB RAM
  • 32GB Internal Storage
  • 10MP Camera
  • 2MP Front Facing Camera
  • 3500 mAh Battery

As you can see, the specs are more less the same across the board.  The key differences in each phone are the screen size and battery size.  All in all, a good variety of options and three very solid looking devices.

Now as I said at the start, these devices may or may not make their way to Canada but they may actually tell us a bit about the Moto X.  These phones will all feature the new Touchless Controls that we’ve already seen in Rogers Moto X promo video.  This feature allows your phone to constantly listen to you so that you can interact with the phone with just your voice.  The new X8 processor that is found in all of these devices is by Motorola and it appears to be the key contributor to the Touchless Controls.  The processor consists of a dual-core processor, a quad core GPU, a natural language processor, and a contextual computing core.  Those last two cores are what make the Touchless Controls really work well as they’re dedicated to listening to you.

Once you break down processor into it’s components, all those rumours about the Moto X housing a dual-core processor make sense.  The main processor is indeed only a dual-core processor, but there are technically 8 cores packed into this device.  That’s why it likely performs so well on the benchmarks despite the lack of processing cores.

These phones also appear to share the same camera as the Moto X.  So once we start seeing some real world shots from the new Droid phones, we’ll likely have a good idea at how well the camera really performs.

Now the idea that the Moto X will share the same processor and camera as the Droid phones is purely speculation on my part but it just makes sense to me that the Moto X will essentially be a variation of these devices.  What do you guys think?
