Introducing The All New HTC One (M8)
The HTC One (M8) is officially here and while there wasn’t a whole lot we didn’t already know about the device prior to the launch, I figured I’d throw a little summary together anyway. Let’s start with the specs:
- 5″ 1080p LCD3 Display
- 2.3 GHz Quad-Core Snapdrgaon 801 Processor
- 2GB RAM
- 16GB/32GB Internal Storage
- microSD CArd Slot
- Duo UltraPixel Camera
- 5MP Front Facing Camera
- 2,600mAh Battery
- 146.3mm x 70.6mm x 9.35mm
- 160g
- Android 4.4.2 with HTC Sense 6.0
On the spec front, things look pretty good. The phone can definitely hold its own against the competition although there are a few things HTC could have improved a bit. First off, the 2600 mAh battery does seem a tad on the small side as many manufacturers are pushing into the 3000mAh+ range. An extra GB of RAM would have also been nice to ensure a super smooth performance but 2GB is still sufficient at the very least.
The camera may also leave some people wanting for a bit more. While HTC didn’t offer up a MP count for their rear camera, from what I’ve been able to gather the main camera on the back is still a 4MP UltraPixel shooter. Of course, the camera is now paired with a new secondary camera that helps to capture depth information, which will allow the user to refocus pictures after the fact. HTC noted in their presentation that unlike the competition, the One (M8) relies on hardware and not software to create this effect. In theory, this feature/function should work better when done at the hardware level than at the software level but we’ll have to wait and see first hand results before making a conclusion.
On the software side of things, HTC has bumped Sense up to Sense 6.0. While things look relatively similar to what we have on the HTC One, there are some new additions on the software side of things. The most notable addition is probably the new gestures that we had mentioned previously. Swiping either left, right, or up on an off screen to launch specific pages or double tap to lock/unlock the device. They’ve also added some motions (similar to what Samsung has been doing for a while now) such as lifting the phone to you head to answer a call.
The design is probably one of the greatest advantages the One (M8) has over the competition as the unibody design is simply stunning. The curved back should also offer a super comfortable hold and the colour options are a nice touch. The extra bezel on the bottom of the device is still a bit of a question mark and a bit of a bummer as it’s adding length to an already length phone. Nevertheless, it’s a great looking phone.
I should hopefully be getting my hands on a review unit soon enough and when I do I’ll be able to fill you guys in all the more on the All New HTC One.
So who’s buying one??
