Hopes For A Cheap Moto X May Still Be Alive

The Moto X was more or less the device all the rumours built it up to be but there was one rumour regarding the phone that was wrong in a big way, the price.  Before the announcement, many were stating that this device would come with a Nexus like price tag, somewhere in the $300-$350 range.  However, we were all greatly disappointed to hear that the device would be carrying a more flagship device price tag, $500-$600 off contract and $200-$300 on contract.

Well according to a new report from Leo Laporte, a well known tech broadcaster, the Moto X is only costing US carriers about $350.  That means that the carriers have jacked up the price significantly in order to profit from sales.  While the news may sound terrible, there is a silver lining here.  If this device does indeed only cost $350 to manufacturers, that means that if Motorola and Google decide to sell the device directly to customers, the low price tag that we were all hoping for could eventually come into affect.  I’ve got all my fingers and toes crossed that this becomes a reality as I was really hoping this device would be a little bit cheaper

In other news from Mr. Laporte, the Moto X will eventually be sold to the Play Store as is.  In other words, it will not get the Google Play Edition treatment in which all of its features are stripped from the device and this makes sense.  The Moto X is, for the most part, stock Android.  It has some unique features, such as the Touchless Controls and Active Display, and to strip this device of these features is to basically remove that which makes the Moto X the Moto X.

There’s still no time frame as to when this might happen and I would still technically classify it as a rumour, but lets hope that it happens soon and forces carriers to lower their pricing on the device a little bit.  I’ll be keeping a close eye on these developments and will be sure to pass the news on as soon as possible.
