Samsung’s Smartwatch May Be Called Samsung Galaxy Gear

Samsung has already let the public know they’re planning a wearable device, or smart watch and recent rumours even point for a September release in this year’s IFA. Today we give you the first official news of a possible name for the smart watch and in the process confirming the smart watch is in fact one of Samsung’s projects.

The Korean company has filed a trademark application at the United States Patents and Trademarks Office for the trademark name “Samsung Galaxy Gear”. While the name doesn’t really confirm anything, what is interesting it’s the application, which specifies in what devices the trademark will be used.

“Wearable digital electronic devices in the form of a wristwatch, wrist band or bangle capable of providing access to the Internet and for sending and receiving phone calls, electronic mails and messages; wearable electronic handheld devices in the form of a wristwatch, wrist band or bangle for the wireless receipt, storage and/or transmission of data and messages and for keeping track of or managing personal information; smart phones; tablet computers; portable computers.”

And this is a fancy way of saying Smart Watch. The name fits in Samsung’s Galaxy line so it would be a safe assumption that it runs Android, which would make it a standalone device instead of an accessory. Nonetheless, this is only a supposition as the device could very well be just an accessory.

However, let’s keep in mind that a trademark application doesn’t necessarily mean that the name will in fact be used on an upcoming product or for that matter, that a project like the one described in the application even exists. It could simply mean that Samsung wants to hold onto this name before they need it and someone else already got it.

Whatever the case may be, Samsung may very well be the first Android OEM to release a Smart Watch and with interest growing and technology evolving it will be great to see what comes out of this project. Don’t forget to leave your opinion on the name and possible device on the comment section below.
