Why people wanted black apps
The author of the original post listed three reasons. Dark apps often look better, they save some battery on AMOLED screens, and they are easier on the eyes at night. This was an update to an earlier article on the same topic, written after the apps had changed a good deal.
Which apps needed root
The dividing line was simple. A non-system app could be installed on any Android device without complications. A system app had to be removed first, and removing it required root.

- Google+ (only on Galaxy Nexus and other Ice Cream Sandwich phones)
Everything else in the set was reported to install without root.
The setup shown in the post
The screenshots combined black versions of Google+, Google Music, Docs, Reader, Translate and Talk with a lock screen widget app and a themed replacement messaging app. The author preferred a different black Gmail from the one offered by the same modder, because black text on a black background made some emails unreadable.
Warnings from the author
- A dark-themed Android Market was left out on purpose. It looked fine, but buying paid apps either force closed or failed to authorize the payment.
- Make a backup before installing any app that requires root. The tests went well for the author, but success was not guaranteed for others.
