Rumour: Galaxy S IV To Feature Touchless Gestures

GalaxySIV-jpg

The Galaxy S IV rumour wheel just keeps on spinning and today a new rumour has emerged for what will likely be the next phone for millions and millions of people.  According to the latest rumour, the Galaxy S IV will feature touchless gestures.  What does that mean exactly?  Well it means that you’ll be able to navigate around the phone without actually touching the screen.  So perhaps we’ll have less fingerprints on our phones finally!

Now I’m not too sure exactly how this will be achieved but there are a couple of phones that already feature some sort of touchless interaction.  The Sony Xperia Sola utilizes something called “floating touch.”  This just builds on your average capacitive touch screen technology but makes some adjustments so that the screen can differentiate between a hovering finger and a finger on the screen (it’s a lot more complex than that but I figured I would try to summarize).

The other option is to use the front facing camera to recognize different gestures.  This kind of technology is already used on the Pantech Vega LTE and is also, to some degree, similar to the XBox Kinect technology.  This technology is apparently very power hungry though so Samsung would have to do some magic to make it viable for a smartphone and it’s limited battery.

What do you guys think about this rumour?  Is it something we’ll see?

P.S. The picture is simply one of the many renders that have popped up, it may or may not be the actual phone
