How to Setup T-Mobile G1 on EDGE on Rogers/Fido

How to Setup T-Mobile G1 on EDGE on Rogers/Fido

Today we’re going to take a look at a quick tutorial on how to setup your T-Mobile G1 Android handset on Rogers/Fido. More important, we’re going to focus on how to get your EDGE connection working in Canada. The web is full of scattered resources on getting this working so I thought I’d create a post to help everyone out there.

As you may already know, the T-Mobile G1 is a quad band GSM phone (850/900/1800/1900) that has GPRS/EDGE capabilities, but it is only dual band (1700/2100Mhz) when it comes to UMTS/HSPA (also known as 3G). Rogers GSM only operates on 850/1900Mhz, so getting 3G to work in Canada is not possible!

So if you’re a heavy data user, you might want to reconsider using an unlocked T-Mobile G1 in Canada because you’ll be limited to EDGE. If you’re really craving 3G, I would stick to an iPhone 3G.

Tutorial on How to Setup your T-Mobile G1 on EDGE with Rogers/Fido

1. Go to Settings–>Wireless controls–>Mobile networks–>Access Point Names–>Press MENU–>select NEW APN

**Important Setup Notes**
– you will see the default T-Mobile APNs. Please delete them first before adding the following APNs for a trouble free setup.
– ensure that the first SIM card you pop into your T-Mobile G1 is the same SIM you use to setup EDGE. Users have had issues activating with an old SIM, then popping in NEW SIM cards later on.

2. Add the following information:
* Name: Rogers
* APN: internet.com
* Username: wapuser1
* Password: wap
* MCC: 302
* MNC: 72 (or try 720 with newer SIM cards)
3. Press Menu–>Save. EDGE should appear on your handset if you’re in an EDGE coverage area.
4. If you’re on Fido, setup a NEW APN and use these settings:
* Name: Fido
* APN: internet.fido.ca
* Username: fido
* Password: fido
* MCC: 302
* MNC: 37 (or 370 if you have a newer Fido SIM)

How to Setup MMS on T-Mobile G1 on Rogers/Fido

Here are some settings to get MMS working on your T-Mobile G1 phone.

* Name: Rogers MMS
* APN: media.com
* Username: media
* Password: mda01
* Server: 172.25.0.107 – or maybe this should be * – I’ve tried both
* MMSC: http://mms.gprs.rogers.com
* APN type: mms
* MMS Proxy: 10.128.1.69
* MMS Port: 80

Internet browsing, sending emails, video and SMS should work if you use the above settings. MMS should also work if you follow the above settings too. Please remember that you will NEED a smartphone data plan (Blackberry data plans will not work). So have fun enjoying your T-Mobile G1 in Canada!
