Motorola Atrix Lap Top Dock Review:

I picked up my Laptop Dock just after stores opened on Thursday March 17. This was no easy feat. In fact I visited two different bell stores and neither one had the Laptop Dock (LTD) in stock. I am however relentless when it comes to Android and I was able to find one LTD at the Source of all places. Not only was the dock hard to find, but I believe I am the first to purchase the LTD in my city (yay me!). Now to get into the review of this dock. err.. laptop.. err accessory… ummm how about amazing device.

First taking a look at this device it’s very sleek, sexy, thin, compact and yet feels very solid. The dock is well constructed and ,all in all, the device build quality feels worth every bit of that $399 price tag.

Getting into WebTop:

Coming from a Mac Book Pro I have to say the track pad does take some getting used to. No side scrolling on the track pad does kind of make browsing a bit of a hassle, until you get used to it or a attach a wireless mouse that is.

The user interface is nice and offers a desktop like feel. Although you cannot place icons on the “desktop” you can change the wallpaper (yay). So with that being said I find myself using the phones interface more then anything. Having a full version of Firefox is nice. It really does feel as though you are using a full out laptop (or net book). There are a lot of great features to the LTD and the future potential of this technology is exciting. The fact that Android OS is running on what is basically a laptop is incredible.

The LTD has two USB ports at the back allowing you to use USB flash drives as external storage space or of course a wireless mouse which definitely makes browsing more pleasurable. I was able to plug in my 32Gb USB flash drive loaded with movies and using WebTops’ file manager I was then able to access the drive and watch the movies. However it was not able to read my 1-terabyte external drive. It said no file system was found. You can also move folders and files within the phone to the drive or vice versa. To be quite honest this has turned out to be basically its own platform comparable to Windows and Apple in their early days. At a basic level you can pretty much do on this what you can with a regular Net book/Laptop.

All in all I would recommend this accessory to anybody that has a need to carry a laptop or some sort of device with them for school, business, travel etc. For example I wrote, edited and researched my latest posts from this device with NO problems. I switched between windows, tabs, landscape and portrait views with no lag or loading time especially with the useful (Mac OS like) expose feature.

Battery time is amazing you get a full 8 hours OF USE with the LTD while at the same time charging your phone. This can prove to be VERY useful when traveling.

I give this device a solid 7/10. Concept is great and the technology is amazing. It is however first generation technology and as such there is definitely room for improvement. If Motorola were smart they would monopolize and capitalize on this. Am I the only one that sees the potential here? It feels as if we are weeks away from seeing Android powered Pc’s we already have the LTD….or at least I do… are you getting it?
