ZAGG Sparq 2.0 Portable Battery Charger Hands-On Review

Anyone one who knows me personally knows that I go crazy for Android accessories. No matter how many I have, there is always something better just around the corner.

If you missed all the commotion over on my Google+ profile, my wife and I just had our first baby last Sunday. Sitting in the hospital room after she gave birth, she looked at her Galaxy Nexus and noticed her battery was sitting right around 4%. This was before she even had a chance to snap a few pictures and share the wonderful news with friends and family. Needless to say, I was given the task to get her a charger and a reliable one at that, which brings me to my next accessory review.

ZAGG Sparq 2.0

The same people who make those amazing invisible shield screen protectors for our phones also make a just as amazing portable charger. The ZAGG Sparq 2.0 holds a maximum of 6,000mAh of juice, which is more than enough to charge even some of the biggest phones multiple times. The ZAGG Sparq 2.0 also features a very handy flip out prongs to plug directly into the wall for charging.

This is a great design for many reasons:

• No fumbling around with extra unnecessary wires.
• No need to carry a wall charger or access to a computer to charge your portable battery.
• Charges faster than some of your conventional portable battery that requires a USB to be charged.

ZAGG Sparq 2.0 also has these great additional features:

• X2 USB ports for charging devices, General & Optimized.
• General charges at approximately 500mAh. if you have a 1850mAh battery, your looking at a 4 hour charge from 0% to 100%.
• Optimized charges up to 2,000mAh. if you have a 1850mAh battery, your looking at a 1-2 hour charge(Phone must support fast charge).
• Both General and Optimized USB charging posts can be used at the same time.
• 4 yellow lights indicate power level, 25%-50%-75%-100%.

All while maintaining the size of a hockey puck (Odd measurement I know, but every Canadian knows that size eh?).

A few people have knocked this charger due to its size compared to other similar chargers, but one thing we need to remember, it has a built in wall prongs for charging. Not to mention this is a whopping 6,000mAh battery we’re talking about here.

Cons: 

• The extra features this charger has, makes it a little larger than some of the competition.
• Optimized charging port requires an optimized cable to benefit from the extra speed, otherwise it charges at normal speed.
• No USB cables included in the box.
• Price? $99.99 seems to be too high for some, I feel it’s reasonable for what you’re getting.
• Full charge takes approximately 6 Hours – (First initial charge recommended 9 hours)

For me personally, this is one of the best chargers I’ve had the pleasure to wrap my fingers around so far. The fact that this charger also helped my wife and I share those pictures in a time of need just places it in a special place in my heart.
