Let The Speculation End: No Chrome – Android Merge Coming
Today Google Chairman Eric Schmidt put recent speculation of an impending merger between Chrome OS and Android to rest. The rumours have been largely fuelled by both the unveiling of a chrome Android Statue at Google’s Mountain View Campus as well as the shuffling of Google Execs, namely Sundar Pichai former VP of Chrome and Apps, replacing Andy Rubin as the head of Android.
Schmidt at Google’s Big Tent event in India told attendees that Chrome OS and Android are “certainly going to remain separate for a very long time, because they solve different problems.” However while no merge is in the books we can expect more commonality between the two platforms. This is relatively unsurprising given the push towards a cloud based web experience that would require commonality between devices and platforms.
Considering the wide popularity of Android among consumers as well as developers, manufacturers and carriers it would not make sense for Google to merge the two platforms any time in the near future. Especially with an OS such as Chrome which to date is still largely unproven and hasn’t reach a wide market. Although ever since Google announced the end of Google Reader I can no longer claim to know what Google has in store for us.
