Future LTE Wireless Chips–VoLTE, Will Increase Battery Life by 50%

According to a report from ST-Ericsson the next generation of LTE radios featuring VoLTE (Voice over LTE) technology will increase battery performance and reduce consumption by 50%.  This isn’t the only benefit of next-gen LTE technology as it will also increase call quality and improve performance in areas of poor coverage.  This would be achieved by reducing signal overhead and using special protocols.

With VoLTE, according to the report, consumers could see the demise of dreaded per-minute based voice plans and SMS (text messages) would be sent via the carrier’s data network.

Currently, our friends down South using MetroPCS already have some of the benefits of VoLTE in select areas and Verizon plans on rolling out the technology sometime this year, with nation wide coverage by early 2024.

As wireless technology expands battery life has been stagnant and with the recent addition of LTE radios in phones it hasn’t been any better.  The only thing users can do currently is to disable LTE, but for those that have it, switching back to HSPA/+ is like going back to dialup, but with the power consumption of these radios there, sometimes there is no choice but to do so.  All we can do is wait and see how this plays out throughout the year.

Do you think VoLTE will increase battery life or should cellphone OEM’s focus their attention on improving battery technology?
