Google IO Day 1 wrap up (Android edition)

Okay, there’s so much going on, that it’ll be hard to to a good enough review of each item.  Plus I’ve had a hectic day (sorry for the late write up here guys)

Let’s just take a look at the broad strokes:

Play Store improvements

  • Devices now in Canada (well, just the Nexus Tablet)
  • update/uninstall from web
  • Magazines / TV Shows (where’s Canada eh?)

Nexus Q

I’m still trying to make heads or tails of this thing.  Is it just some fancy player device, or can it share files both ways?  Does it only share via NFC?  It’s been a long day, sorry!

Nexus Tablet

I’m THIS close to buying it.  That’s a hell of a tablet!

& it’s available for Candians out of the gate too!

Google+ app new layout

Loving the new layout

I love the flippy card feel to it (which is funny as I don’t like flipboard). Very well thought out.

Google+ Events

Plunked right into the app right away, and they integrate into your calendar already!

Plus there’s a ‘party mode’, where those who are invited to the event can turn it on, and photos taken while it’s on get shared to the events photo gallery.  Amazing.

Jellybean

It’s apparently ready to be flashed, as taken from files of the phones given out from the device.  I’ll let you brave flasher find on your own.

  • Google Now – a time / location sensitive app to give you the information you need (not available in Canada … yet)

  • Project Butter – speedier architecture
  • Better searching with Knowledge Graph
  • Better notification tray
allows you to condense notifications of one type, or get more info on each
  • Camera gestures
swiping switches from live view of the camera to gallery view
  • Widget tweaks
auto resizing upon moving items around

  • App updates will only update the parts that need updating
(instead of redownloading the whole file for every minor update)

That’s day 1 folks… a hell of a lot of stuff to throw at you.  Crappy that it happened on a busy day for me that I couldn’t cover more of it.

What was your favourite bit of today’s announcement?
