What Sony highlighted

  • Screen share of the body. Sony said the display took up about 75 per cent of the front footprint, while most phones of the day fell between 60 and 68 per cent. Its footnote called this the highest ratio among phones announced up to that point.
  • Display tech. The screen used Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2, drawn from Sony’s televisions.
  • Camera. Exmor RS was described as the first image sensor to bring HDR video to smartphones, which helps with backlit scenes.
  • One-touch sharing. NFC lets the phone send music, photos and video to compatible Sony speakers, headphones and TVs with a tap.
  • Battery STAMINA Mode. It switches off battery-draining apps while the screen is off, and Sony claimed at least four times the standby time under its test conditions.
  • Design. A shatter-proof sheet over scratch-resistant glass, and the rounded OmniBalance look.

Media apps

The phone shipped with the WALKMAN, Album and Movies apps. Sony said WALKMAN gave access to a library of 18 million songs through Music Unlimited, and Movies offered more than 100,000 films and series through Video Unlimited. Availability of those services varied by region.
