Dates and offers
- Note 3, Gear, S III mini and S4 mini: available from October 4 through major mobile providers and retailers.
- Bundle deal: $100 off when a Note 3 and a Gear are bought together at the point of sale from October 4 to 6.
- Galaxy Note 10.1 (new edition): November, in time for holiday shopping.
- The Samsung KNOX security feature was also part of the announcement.
The writer of the original post found the S III mini an odd addition, wondering why two mini phones would launch together. All of this had been announced globally at an Unpacked event in Berlin earlier that month.
Galaxy Note 3
The third Note had a 5.7-inch full HD Super AMOLED display, an 8.3 mm body and a 3,200 mAh battery, which Samsung described as bigger, slimmer and longer lasting than the Note 2. The back cover had a soft, textured feel with stitching. It came in Jet Black and Classic White.
- S Pen: Air Command, Action Memo, Scrapbook and Pen Window, plus a new S Note that syncs through a Samsung account.
- Camera: 13 MP rear camera with Smart Stabilization and a high CRI LED flash.
- Multi Window: switch between apps, or run two windows of one app, with drag and drop between them.
- KNOX: a personal container for private content, which can be used without involving a company IT department.
Galaxy Gear
Samsung’s first smartwatch was designed to pair with the Note 3 and other Galaxy phones later that year. It came in Jet Black, Wild Orange and Oatmeal Beige.
- Quick Glance to preview incoming messages
- Voice memos from the wrist
- Auto Lock, which locks the phone screen when it is more than 1.5 metres from the watch
- A built-in speaker for hands-free calls
- A 1.9 MP camera for photos and video, called Memographer
- Music controls and a pedometer
- S Voice for notes, calendar items and weather
Galaxy Note 10.1 and the minis
The new Note 10.1 had a screen with four times the pixel density of the original, a 1.9 GHz octa-core processor, Multi Window, improved S Pen features and KNOX.
The S III mini has a 4.0-inch Super AMOLED screen and the S4 mini a 4.3-inch one. Samsung pitched them as smaller versions of its bestsellers, easy to use one-handed, and priced to fit two-year carrier contracts at new price points.
