Newkia Will Brand Their Phones Under A Different Name
As we reported a couple of days ago, a group of former Nokia employees have decided to start up a new company, Newkia, to finally bring together some sort of marriage between Android and Nokia. It has been the dream of many Android users out there for Nokia to begin producing Android devices as they still have some of the best hardware, not to mention best cameras. Of course, that will never happen as they are forever tied to Windows, but that’s exactly where Newkia wants to step in.
Thomas Zillacus, founder of the new company, spoke to CNET Asia today to discuss the new company and where things are at at the moment. To begin with, future phones from the company will not be branded under Newkia, as fun as that might be for the techies out there. He stated that he does have some names in mind but didn’t disclose any of them.
Zillacus also told CNET Asia that he will not be taking on the role of CEO but that the role will be filled by someone whose “name you have all heard of before.” He goes on to say that they have been receiving several job applications since the initial announcement and that even some current Nokia employees want to jump on board as they would rather not have to work for Microsoft.
And in case you were wondering about Newkia and other OS’, Zillacus stated that there are no plans to use any other OS right now. He was specifically asked if he would be contacting Jolla, the company behind Sailfish OS (and another group of former Nokia employees who jumped shipped when they ditched Meego) but Zillacus stated that they would rather go with Android and it’s extensive and ever growing eco system.
So there you have it. Not a ton of information but interesting stuff nonetheless. I’m really interested to see what these guys pull together and I’m always happy to see another manufacturer in the Android world/
