In case you missed it in yesterday’s Korea Times, an article describing LG’s plans for 2024 to rise out of its current second-tier status behind Apple and Samsung quoted a senior executive in the know and provided some juicy details about what we should expect to see at next month’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

“This year won’t be as bullish for LG as last year. But LG’s Optimus G and Nexus 4 impressed some major carriers and consumers. Because our budget Optimus smartphones are receiving lots of attention, we are confident to get our phone business on a rising track this year,’’ said the executive.

Although unconfirmed by LG, the company is preparing to release the Optimus GK, a 1080p 5.5” smartphone/tablet hybrid featuring a quad-core processor. The release will be LG’s third attempt at competing with Samsung’s Galaxy Note, after failing with the relatively unpopular Vu and Vu:2.

Due to the success of the Note, it seems as though more and more of the major players in the smartphone scene are changing their tune regarding the phablet form factor. Over the past few months, HTC, Sony, ZTE, Huawei and other, lesser known brands such as Oppo and Lenovo have gone on to announce a crossover handset.
