Galaxy Gingerbread Update – Europe Soon… Canada When? [update]

So the rumours are aflutter.  Samsung has laid out that the Galaxy line will be getting the Gingerbread; so far all that’s known is that it’s on the UK market’s radar.  This is good news.  Why?  Well, we’ll be next!

Typically, us northerners have been forced to suffer to wait the delay of many of Google’s goodness (I’m still salivating for the day that GV comes our way, or that GoogleTV can grace our shelves).  When I had a previous HTC model phone we got our Eclair update almost a year after the US counterparts got theirs (they were even just about to put out the Froyo update and we hadn’t had it yet).

But for the Galaxy line this wasn’t the case.  When they released the phone in Canada it wasn’t much longer after that we saw the Froyo update.  The timeline went November (UK), December (Canada), Jan/Feb (AT&T, etc…).

This is in the face that the hardware is slightly different in Canada than it is in the US (note all the issues that the US market has seen with it’s GPS and nary any Canadian reported similar problems).  Typically a hardware difference has what’s caused us to be behind.

Maybe somebody in Samsung is listening to their Canadian customers – I know I’ve had some pretty good customer service in dealing with them msyelf.

Now, there are some issues that could come because of this, which I hope isn’t the case.  When Bell released their FROYO update it was plagued with issues – causing bricks in some case.  When they released it for Rogers I had my own issues (see here).  I haven’t heard of similar issues in the states however.  And it would be good to get the update OTA instead of having to use that awful KIES updating software.  I guess we’ll just have to wait until there’s more news on the UK update.

Update – just noticed today on Android Central that a leaked version of Gingerbread for the Galaxy S i9000 has been found.   We’re a step closer to that update.
