End Of The Road For Nexus S And Motorola Xoom

It looks like two more devices have officially hit the end of the road in terms of their upgrade-ability.  According to one of Google’s AOSP leads, Jean-Baptiste Queru, these two devices will note be getting any further updates.  Here’s a statement released on Google Groups:

“There is no support for 4.2 on Nexus S and Xoom. Those devices should continue using 4.1.2″

Disappointing news for sure, especially since both devices were able to get the initial Android 4.2 updates.  On the surface, it doesn’t look like there were any major changes in Android 4.2 that would cripple these older devices.  But if Google itself  isn’t planning to update them, it must mean they can’t handle the update.

The device that I’m more surprised about is the Motorola Xoom.  The Nexus S I can understand being hindered due to it’s limited RAM, however, the Motorola Xoom is on par with the Galaxy Nexus in terms of it’s raw power so it’s surprising to me that that device would not get updated as well.

I’m certain that the developer community will push these devices a little bit further but it’s sad to see that there won’t be any more official updates rolling out of Google for these devices.
