A couple days ago, Google released the Android Open-Source Project code for Android 4.2.2, and today, it would seem the team responsible for the excellent Cyanogen ROM was able to make quick use of Google’s offering. If you’re unfamiliar with how Cyanogen ROMs work, basically, they build upon Google’s AOSP code as a basis with a lot of really good, practical customization and optimization for your device.
What many people using Android devices don’t realize is that more than likely, the latest version of Android is already available for your device through Cyanogen ROMs. This is true even for those of you who may find yourselves stuck on 4.1 or 4.0 due to your wireless carrier or device’s manufacturer holding things up. So, unless you’re absolutely in love with HTC’s Sense or Samsung’s TouchWiz user interfaces, you really ought to check this out.
Although I’m on a Nexus 4 now, I was previously using an HTC One X that I basically flashed with Cyanogen a week after I bought it. When I sold the phone, I reverted the system back to HTC Sense, giving me a chuckle as to how slow and featureless I had forgotten Sense was. As such, I always tell people to base their Android purchasing decision on hardware specs alone because software can almost always be solved by Cyanogen.
The team just released the M2 build for CM 10.1, which is a highly polished version of Android 4.2.2, albeit not a stable release.
All the devices in the Nexus lineup are supported by M2 builds as well as most of Samsung’s more popular devices, like the S2, S3, Galaxy Note, etc.. The HTC One X and S models and a few LG devices also have builds available.
You can find the full list of supported devices below as well as the link to the CM page to get your flash on.
