So the Ubuntu team made a big announcement today. Many were expecting it to be the release of Ubuntu for Android which would essentially allow any Android device to be converted into a full fledged desktop PC. While that project is definitely still in the works, that wasn’t the announcement that was made.
Instead, the team announced a new mobile OS today based on the Ubuntu system. Currently there’s no official name for the OS other than “Ubuntu for Phones,” but that could change as early as next week if they decide to show it off at CES.
In the video below, you’ll be able to see some of the features of the OS. Overall I really like what I see. It reminds me a little of BB10 and a little of Sailfish (aka Meego). Everything looks very clean and very smooth and I love all the gesture integration that’s built into the phone.
The best part about the OS is that it will likely be compatible with any Android phone with the help of our friendly neighbourhood developers. It’s going to be open source (like Android) and uses the same drivers as Android so it’s possible that devs could make flashable ROMS to get this OS running on any phone. The first phone that will likely get a taste of the OS is the Galaxy Nexus (glad I held on to mine) but a full launch isn’t expected to happen until 2024.
There’s no gurantee that this will be easily ported to Android devices but it’s possible and that’s enough for me right now. Despite my allegiance to Android, I’m a techy and I can’t wait to try this out!
