Android Auto Debuts At I/O
Wearables and the new Android L were just a couple of the many things Google had to show us during their keynote at I/O. Android Auto also made its official debut at the event and I have to say I’m digging it. The simplest way to explain Android Auto is that it’s Android for you car. Essentially Android Auto will work as your car’s infotainment system to provide you with hands free calling and messaging, music, and maps. The interface is simple and limited (in a good way) and the superior voice control allows you to keep your hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.
Based on what I could gather from the keynote, Android Auto does require your phone which has its pros and cons. On the one hand, Android Auto will draw information from each individuals phones so you get a personalized experience. This is particularly neat if you share the car with someone as each person will have their music and their information come to the phone. My potential concern is that since Android Auto relies on your phone, it may be near useless if you don’t have your phone on you. Of course, most people always have their phone with them but it’s a possible concern I see nonetheless.
Android Auto equipped cars will apparently be rolling out by the end of this year so it won’t be long before we see these Android powered cars out and about. My big question though is will they offer aftermarket Android Auto units? My guess is that most of us aren’t buying a new car any time soon but still want to experience Android Auto. I guess we’ll have to just wait and see!
