Rumour: Motorola X Phone Is Much More Than Just A Phone
Earlier this week a video leaked online featuring a mysterious Motorola phone that was running a very vanilla version of Android. The site that leaked the video was quick to note that they did not believe this to be the Motorola X Phone as the specs didn’t match up at all with the the current rumours. Today we’re getting word that that phone may actually be an early prototype of the X Phone and there’s a new rumour circulating that the X Phone is going to be much more than just one phone.
According to Androidandme.com, a “friend” with the inside knowledge of Motorola’s upcoming plans has revealed some very interesting information about the upcoming X Phone. To begin with, the X Phone is actually not so much referring to a singular phone but to a new line of phones (similar to the Galaxy line). This definitely makes sense to me as Motorola needs to create a real brand name for their smartphones.
In addition to creating a new line, Motorola is expected to create an entirely new way to purchase and customize phones. The same source says that you will be able to customize your phone prior to purchase. What does that mean? Well to begin with, you’ll be able to pre-load wallpapers, ringtones, contacts, etc. before you purchase the phone. Secondly you’ll be able to choose whether you want the phone SIM unlocked and bootloader unlocked. Thirdly, and most impressively, you’ll be able to customize the specs! That’s right! Need more RAM, well add it to the device! Need more internal storage, well make sure you select it then!
If this comes into fruition it’ll be a real game changer and something we have never seen when it comes to the mobile tech world. In my opinion, this is a very natural progression for the mobile tech industry. As phones and tablets continue to become more and more like personal computers, the buying process should naturally follow suit. When you purchase a computer (if you purchase it directly from the manufacturer) you can customize the specs of your computer so you get exactly what you want to fit your exact needs. So why not bring that idea to the mobile tech world?
Now back to the rumours…The first X Phone will feature some sort of Octo-Core chip with one chip being dedicated to Motorola’s new “human language system.” I’m not to sure what that means but my guess is that it’ll simply offer a much more natural way for your phone to speak to you and listen to you.
The last bit of the rumour has to do with pricing and availability. The first X Phones are expected to make their way to market in June and will be available both through your local carriers and online. My guess is that if you go the carrier route you won’t have the customization options but, again, this makes sense as it mimics the personal computer purchasing process. In terms of pricing their are no figures available but the source says that we should expect a heavily subsidized phone, similar to what LG and Google accomplished with the Nexus 4.
Again, these are rumours with a capital “R” but if these rumours turn out to be true, Motorola and Google are going to completely reshape the mobile industry as we know it. What do you guys think ? Are you on board with this new purchasing process?
