Ubuntu moving into the mobile OS space
Ubuntu will start to look at expanding the compatibility of the OS onto newer devices.
Now there’s a lot going on with this and people saying that it’ll compete with Google. I’m not sure it would. Let me update that… ‘could’. Surely, there might be some of us in the nerd-dome that like Linux, but there’s something about Google that drew us here in the first place.
For me, at least, Ubuntu has been that OS that helped breathe life into an old system, or something for that grandparent who just wanted to see the baseball scores and the occasional email. How that responds to a mobile OS is entirely different. There’ll be some hard core geeks who’ll tell you how similar they are, but for me they’re worlds apart.
It seems the no brainer, as they’ve been building that platform to work on many many many old laptops and desktops. And it’s not a bad OS. I’ve used it on 3 of my netbooks. Even one I sold recently to a friend who used it and actually liked that it didn’t have XP/7 on it [I had to do a double take]. So it’s my prediction that we’ll probably see it ported onto tablets first, before we start seeing it on a phone.
At best it’ll be a truly open source platform that allows users to Kang away without fear of voiding warranties. Will it allow manufacturer partners to entirely side-step the patent war that Android is currently facing. We haven’t heard any of the big dogs attacking Linux … as of yet.
And apparently it’s been done alredy:
Oh, and here’s my shameless plug for more space!
