Skype Now Available for Android Phones
Here is a monster story for all you Android users out there–Skype is now available! Instead of iPhone users having all the fun, Skype has announced that they have an official Android app that will make calls over WiFi and 3G. Here’s an excerpt from their blog:
You’ve been asking us for it – and now it’s here. Skype is now available on a wide range of Android phones, so you can save money and stay in touch when you’re out and about. Visit skype.com/m on your phone to download, or read on to find out what’s inside.
With the new app, you can make free Skype-to-Skype calls, and send and receive IMs for free, one-to-one or with a group. You can also call phones at Skype’s great rates – over WiFi or 3G.
To make calls and send texts to phones abroad, simply dial the number in Skype and pay with Skype Credit – or make unlimited calls with a subscription. When you’re abroad, we recommend that you connect to a WiFi zone for best value.
If you already use Skype on a computer, you’ll see your full contact list when you sign in to Skype on your Android phone. If not, you can set up an account and be ready to go in minutes.
You can download Skype from the Android Market, or from skype.com/m on your phone. You’ll need Android OS 2.1 or later – check Settings > About if you’re not sure what version your phone is running.
The team notes that calls over 3G won’t work in the USA, only WiFi. There are issues with the Samsung Galaxy S. The app has been tested on Android OS 2.1 and higher. Who’s excited for this? Let us know how it works for you in the comments!
