The problem
The Dream had a physical keyboard, yet many owners wanted an on-screen one for quick typing. On the Rogers version, the soft keyboard was disabled for reasons that were never explained, and it was a large and annoying gap for new owners.
How the community solved it
Savvy users on Android forums worked out a method. In outline, it meant installing a small Android package on the phone from a memory card and then switching on a Touch Input option in the Locale and Text settings. Once enabled, the keyboard could be adjusted in the settings.
- The package could be removed again by uninstalling Touch Input from the application manager.
- Two versions existed: a regular, unskinned one and a marble-coloured one.
Why the steps are not listed
The method relied on downloading a file from a file-sharing site and installing it outside the store. That is risky, and the phone has not been supported for years. Treat this as a record of how early owners worked around a carrier restriction.
