Asus’ very first wearable is official as the company announced their Android Wear powered ZenWatch earlier today! In discussing the design philosophy for the ZenWatch Mitch Yang said “Our design philosophy is Start with People. We want to deliver a seamless digital experience for everyone to enjoy. With our ZenWatch, you will always be connected to everything that matters in your life.” Given what Asus has produced in the ZenWatch I would say that they nailed it on the design front. The watch is very thin (especially when you compare it to the competition) and is very stylish with its curved display and leather strap.
Asus also promises a good deal of functionality with the watch. Some of the features include “Watch Unlock, Tap Tap, Remote Camera, Cover to Mute, Find My Phone and Presentation Control.” Asus did note that the seamless integration is tied in with Asus’ own ZenUI so I guess we’ll have to wait and see just how many of these features will be applicable to non Asus phones.
The watch also comes with a 9-axis sensor which will be essential in allowing for fitness tracking and managing for the end user. It seems that the fitness tracking will also be best optimized for users who are using an Asus phone but I’m sure there will be benefit for non Asus users as well.
Unfortunately, Asus hasn’t provided any firm pricing or a release date but if the rumours are to be believed, this should come with a much more palatable price tag than some other watches on the market. Choosing a smart watch just got a whole lot trickier.
