So a week or so ago I picked up an HTC EVO 3D off of Kijiji for a pretty cheap price. I’d always wanted to give this phone a whirl but never actually got around to beyond a couple of minutes here and there at stores that had demos. I was actually quite surprised with the overall performance of the phone. ICS really helped bring the speed and fluidity of this device to bring it into the upper echelon of devices. But of course that’s not why I bought it. I wanted to try out the 3D capabilities of the phone.
So the EVO 3D and the Optimus 3D were the only two devices of its kind to launch here in Canada. When they were first announced I remember the majority of techies being very excited to see the “new dimension” of screen technology. However, it quickly fell into things past as the focus quickly shot over to screen resolution rather than extra dimensions. In my time with the device, I have to say I was rather impressed with the first go at 3D capable phones. Were all my shots that I took perfect? No. But I was able to catch some great pictures of people and animals and just random junk lying around that really had that extra level of depth.
Viewing pictures and videos was always tricky. Finding that ideal angel could be tough but when I finally figured it out the pictures definitely popped. I remember watching some animated short on YouTube on the phone and there was definitely a portion where it felt like something was coming out of the screen.
So after my experience with it I’m a little bummed that this didn’t catch on a little bit more. While I don’t think it’s a necessary feature that should be on every phone, I wish they would have spent a little more time trying to develop this technology. I see the potential and I think you some manufacturers could really put together some top of the line 3D phones that could sell really well. But for now I’m left to wonder what could have been.
Anybody else left wondering and wishing for another 3D phone to hit the market?
