Samsung didn’t showcase much at CES this week but that doesn’t mean the giant tech company won’t still make some headlines.  According to a new report from Bloomberg, Samsung is looking to launch their next flagship, the Galaxy S5, in April of this year.  There were rumours that Samsung was looking to push up the launch date but this date lines up with previous launches so it seems completely plausible.

The news comes courtesy of Lee Young Hee, the executive vice president of the company’s mobile business, so the source is definitely legitimate.  Lee notes in the interview that the company is currently looking into some sort of eye scanning technology, obviously to combat the ever growing want for a fingerprint scanner on a device.  Lee also confirmed what we’ve all been anticipating for a while in a redesigned phone in the S5.

Regarding the design, Lee says “when we moved to S4 from S3, it’s partly true that consumers couldn’t really feel much difference between the two products from the physical perspective, so the market reaction wasn’t as big…For the S5, we will go back to the basics. Mostly, it’s about the display and the feel of the cover.

One final tidbit that Lee made known is that Samsung is planning to launch the next generation Galaxy Gear alongside their new Galaxy S device.

“When we release our S5 device, you can also expect a Gear successor with more advanced functions, and the bulky design will also be improved.”

The original Gear really was quite a flop but I honestly don’t think Samsung was intending to sell millions and millions of those watches to begin with.  I my opinion, they were probably testing out the waters and simply getting their name out there as a player in the wearable tech market.  Hopefully they really bring it with the sequel.
