Android has taken the world by storm, and perhaps now they’re going to take the camera world by storm. Nikon will be releasing an Android powered camera this September. The device model is Coolpix S800c and will cost about $350.
So what exactly is an Android camera? Well, it’s a camera, that also runs Android. The device is, at its heart, a point and shoot camera. But it features a 3.5″ capacitive screen which runs Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread underneath. It also has WiFi built in so you can access the Android Market as well.
So how does it work? It appears that there’s a switch to switch the device between camera and Android. In my readings it appears that the two modes work independently of one another. So it doesn’t seem that you can be in Android mode and take a picture at the same time.
So why have Android at all then? Well Android has lots of photo editing apps available on the market. So in theory, you could take a picture with the camera and then edit it on the camera itself. A rather handy function. I’m unsure if you can use third-party camera software to take pictures. If that were possible, it would definitely make the device a lot more appealing to potential buyers. I’m sure there’s several people who would want to Instagram with a higher mega-pixel, higher quality camera.
What do you guys think? Is there a need for an Android camera?
