Now this is an interesting story. Back when the Motorla X Phone was a complete mystery (I’d call it more of a half mystery now) there was a rumour going around that the device could be customizable. The idea was that you’d be able to pick out some of the key specs of the phone (processor, RAM, memory, etc.), select the colour, and possibly even select the screen size. The process would be a kin to purchasing a car in a lot of ways. Those rumours were later crushed as several reports surfaced saying that this would NOT be the case at all.
Fast forward to today where a very interesting Motorla ad is making its rounds around the web. Based on the content in the ad, it will be making its way to major newspapers tomorrow, just ahead of Independence Day in the states. To some degree, the ad is a shot at Apple’s latest ad campaign which touts how Apple products are designed in the USA. Motorola points out that there new product will be designed, engineered, AND manufactured in the USA.
As wonderful as it is to see companies go at each other, that’s not even the good part. At the end of the ad there’s a simple tag line that may be saying a whole lot. ”Designed by you. Assembled in the USA.” Now I don’t know about you, but when I read the words “designed by you” I’m assuming that I will have some say in how my product is made. Possibly selecting the colour of the device, the processor, the screen size?
I really don’t know what to make of the ad at this point but I’m super excited and confused all at the same time. I’m really hoping that the customizable phone option becomes an reality but at the same time I wouldn’t be surprised at all if it doesn’t become reality as it is a tricky model to put together.
Hopefully we won’t have too much longer to wait to know what all the buzz is about.
