The Galaxy Alpha Is Now Official

Well here it is boys and girls.  The Samsung Galaxy Alpha has finally been officially released and it’s more or less everything we expected it to be.  The focus, of course, is on the design and Samsung is touting the Alpha series as “the evolution of Galaxy Design.”  The big selling point on this guy is definitely going to be the metal frame, a first for any Samsung device.  Despite using metal for the frame, Samsung was actually able to make this their thinnest phone yet, coming in at just 6.7mm.  The back is still made of strong, durable and flexible plastic and it is still textured much like the Galaxy S5.

The specs for the device more or less match up with everything we’ve been seeing in the leaks (see full list below).  While some may cry for better specs (ie. higher res screen, more RAM, etc.) the phone should be able to run with the best of them given the overall set up.  In terms of features, the Alpha packs everything the S5 packs (ie. heart rate monitor, fingerprint scanner, ultra-power saving mode, etc.) but it is NOT going to be water resistant.  So don’t think of doing any swimming with this guy.

Initial availability for the Alpha will begin in September and the phone will come in Charcoal Black, Dazzling White, Frosted Gold, Sleek Silver, and Scuba Blue (new names S5 colour options).  No markets were disclosed in the press release but as we saw previously, there are several variants of this phone out there which hints at a rather wide launch.  While no firm pricing was released, it is expected that this device will be a few hairs cheaper than the flagship S5.  We’ll keep an eye on any Canadian developments and pass on any news once we hear it.

So what do you guys think?  Does Samsung have a true challenger to the upcoming iPhone with the Galaxy Alpha?  Let us know in the comments!
