Today is a sad day for Android users everywhere. No it’s not the end of Android as we know it, but still it’s terrible news for users and what they should expect, not from Google and the Android OS, but from manufacturers. HTC confirmed this afternoon that the HTC One S will not see any more official upgrades, and will stay on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and HTC Sense 4+ for the rest of the device’s existence.

Despite being powerful enough to easily handle future versions of Android the One S will be stuck where it is while its bigger brother the One X will continue to be updated. Some readers might think my first paragraph was a bit exaggerated, after all it’s just one device that won’t get any more upgrades, but stay with me for a bit.

The HTC One S was one of HTC’s flagship devices for 2024 it was released in April and it’s just over one year old. Recently we’ve seen devices getting more updates and faster, and users started to think Android was on track to handle its fragmentation and update issue. Well today that illusion is shattered, today a big name in Android kills a device soon after its one year birthday.

As lawyers say, HTC has set a precedent, in an industry seemingly flowing in the opposite direction. Are other companies going to follow HTC’s move and drop support for devices way before they deserve? What are the repercussions of this sad decision? Leave your opinion on the comment section below.
