The Nexus 5 and Android 4.4 KitKat are barely a month old and already a fairly substantial software update is on the way. The update will bring the Nexus 5 to Android 4.4.1 and is said to bring with it some much wanted/needed camera improvements. The news comes directly from Google’s Director of Engineering for Android, Dave Burke, who recently spoke to The Verge about the update so we know it’s legit.
While Burke discusses several different aspects of the camera in the interview, the overarching theme for the update is speed. The app itself will launch a full second faster than it did before and the shutter speed will be much faster as well. According to Burke, the shutter speed was intentionally slowed down initially to help with low light shots; however, this made for poorer shots in good lighting and often cause motion blur. That should no longer be a problem once the new update rolls out.
Burke also says that photos will be more contrasted once the update hits Nexus 5′s. This was an intentional move by Google as they wanted the photos to on the Nexus 5 to just “pop a little more”.
In terms of a roll out date, the update should begin making its way out to devices within a few days. Although the roll out will begin in a few days, it’ll probably take a couple of weeks before all devices get the update. As we’ve mentioned before, Google purposefully does a slow roll out in order to minimize the number of devices that may encounter undiscovered bugs. So sit tight, the update will come when it comes!
