Why look at an office app

A Microsoft-style office suite is something most people eventually need. Google Drive had some editing but was still limited. Alternatives included QuickOffice, which costs money, and Polaris, which is free but does not come on all phones or as a full version.

The deal

For a few days, ending on May 10 at the time, the app was priced at 99 cents instead of much more. The writer’s reasoning was that a price that low might be its real value, and bought it without high expectations.

What stood out

• Cloud support. Google, Dropbox, Box and SugarSync. For Google, the app used the phone’s account credentials with no extra sign-in, unlike QuickOffice, which had given the writer trouble.
• Editing. About what you would expect, with no surprises.
• Pictures. Images in documents were displayed better than expected, though they could not be moved around.
• Design. Polished and minimalist, with everything needed for editing. The writer began to prefer it to QuickOffice.

Verdict

The writer thought it was a bargain and recommended it for days when you really need a document editor.
