Why a black theme

Many people wanted Google’s apps in black. Besides appearance, dark pixels use less power on AMOLED displays, so the extra battery life was a small bonus.

Gingerbread versus Ice Cream Sandwich

Android versionWhat was needed
GingerbreadNo root or modification. Uninstalling the older Google+ first was recommended.
Ice Cream SandwichRoot access might be required, since Google+ was a system app. If a plain install failed, the system version had to be removed first.

On Ice Cream Sandwich, removal meant using a backup tool such as Titanium Backup, or deleting the PlusOne.apk system file with a root file manager. A backup beforehand was advised.

System apps and risk

Gmail, Google Talk, the Play Store, Google Search, YouTube and, on Ice Cream Sandwich, Google+, are system files. Changing them requires a rooted device. Backing up the originals before flashing was described as highly recommended, and flashing system files was a “flash at your own risk” situation. Non system apps were considered safe for anyone.

Status today

This is a historical item. Modified system apps can break updates and weaken security, and Google+ itself is no longer around. This page does not link to the files.
