The Moto X is official and it’s more or less everything we expected it to be. First lets go over the specs:
- 4.7″ 720p Display
- 1.7GHz Dual-Core X8 Processor
- 2GB RAM
- 16GB/32GB Internal Storage
- 2200 mAh Battery (Non-Removable)
- Android 4.2.2
Now the specs don’t scream flagship device but Motorola’s new X8 processor is unlike anything we’ve seen before. From what Motorola says, their new chip design is integrated very tightly with the OS itself which means you can get a great user experience with a little bit less power (this is very much how Apple does their iDevices). So I’m definitely not going to write it off as a bad device because of the specs.
What also helps to set this phone apart from the pack is the “Okay, Google Now” feature, an always listening voice assistant. This feature is very much tied into that X8 chip and allows you to have a truly hands-free experience with your phone. This definitely brings a whole new dimension to the smartphone experience and will likely take some getting used to. However, if it works as advertised, it could be an amazing next step in the smartphone industry.
The other thing that was really going to set this device apart was customizations. Initially it was thought that users may be able to actually customize the specs; this would have been awesome, but seemed a little far fetched at the time. Turns out that that was true. However, customization to the outside of the phone was still in tact. We have seen more and more colour options surface prior to the announcement and now that it’s official we know that the device will come in a variety of colours. In total, users will be able to choose from 2 front colours, 18 back colours, and 7 trim colours. There are also a couple of wood finishes that look pretty amazing.
Now there’s one major major downside to this whole customization process. It turns out that ONLY AT&T customers will be treated to this customization option (at least for the time being). This is a huge let down for a lot of people (myself included) as there were a lot of people looking forward to the idea of choosing colours and customizations for their new phone.
For us here in Canada (as well as the other US carriers) these options will not be available but the device will only come in the standard white and black. Speaking of Rogers, they will indeed be the exclusive carrier for the phone here in Canada (again, this is at least for the time being). The device can be had through them on a 2-year contract for $189.99. Outright pricing has not been made available quite yet but we’ll keep you posted.
So what do you guys think? Who’s planning on buying? Who’s upset about the exclusives (both Rogers and AT&T)?
