A new rumour has surfaced today that Sony will soon be launching another Xperia Z device. According to Xperia Blog, the new device will be called the Xperia ZR and it looks to be a well crafted mid-level device. Here’s the specs:
- 4.6″ 720p Display
- 1.5GHz Quad-Core Snapdragon S4 Chip (Could possibly use the Snapdragon 600 in place of the S4)
- 2GB RAM
- 13MP Exmor RS Camera
- 8GB Internal Storage
- microSD Card Slot
- 2300 mAh Battery
Add to all of that a IP55/IP58 water resistance rating and you’ve got solid little device there. The IP55/IP58 rating is actually higher than that of the Xperia Z and can handle 30 minutes underwater at a depth of 1.5m. I don’t think I’d be brave enough to submerge a phone for 30 minutes but I’m sure there will some out there who will give it a try and will show it off in a video.
In terms of the design, it’s said to follow the ZL more than the Z. This means we likely won’t have that sleek glass phone but instead will be treated to plastic or rubber backing. The phone is said to be 10mm thick and will weigh in at about 140g.
This is a rumour so take it as such but it wouldn’t be surprising at all for Sony to launch a phone aimed at that mid-level market. Let’s hope that the price stays competitive and that this phone, unlike the Z, makes its way to us here in Canada. With all the snow that hit Saskatchewan this year, a waterproof phone could really come in handy.
