The high-end smartphone market is beginning to slow down but the low -to-mid range market is ripe for the taking. Several up and coming Chinese companies have taken note of this shift as have some of the big guns, including Motorola and HTC. Rather than focusing all their energies towards creating top end and high priced devices, they have began to turn their attention to budget devices.
As this market segment begins to grow, it appears that another HUGE player may be joining the party. According to a Chinese media publication, Google may be partnering up with low-cost chip maker MediaTek to produce a super low cost mid-range device. According to the publication, the information comes from “trusted insiders from Taiwan supply chains” who state that the device will cost just $100!
Again, this is just a rumour so take it as such. If this turns out to be true, it could really shake up the low end market as Google has a huge advantage thanks to their universal brand recognition. What do you guys think? Would you pick up a MediaTek powered Nexus device?
