New York Times Report Suggests A Possibly Underwhelming Galaxy S5

Samsung Unpacked 5

As you all know by now, Samsung will be hosting their Unpacked 5 event at MWC in just a few weeks.  Many, myself included, are speculating that Samsung will unveil their “next big thing” in the Galaxy S5.  The S5 will undoubtedly be one of the hottest smartphones on the market this year and many are expecting some big upgrades in terms of the specs…well everyone except for the New York Times.

According to a new report by the New York Times, the Galaxy S5 will not pack all the goodies that we’ve been hearing about in the rumour mill.  The big omission that the NYT’s notes is the lack of the Quad HD Display on the device.  It has long been speculated that the S5 would launch with an incredible high resolution display (2560×1440) but the NYT’s source says otherwise.

The report does state that Samsung plans to scale things back on the software “feature” (aka gimmick) front which is nice to hear.  The report also states that Samsung is aiming to grab even more of the business sector with a new and improved version of Knox, Samsung’s security software.  Knox has been under quite a bit of scrutiny since launch but with Blackberry dwindling more and more, there’s a huge opportunity there for any manufacturer.

The last little tidbit that the report notes is that Samsung will scale down their event.  Last year Samsung went all out with their NYC Broadway style announcement.  This year, it appears that they’ll ditch all the glitz and glamour and just get down to business.  I’m sure it’ll still be exciting but don’t expect another production.

What do you guys think?  Is the lack of a QHD Display a deal breaker?
